The result of a colour-switch exercise.

There is a lot to be learned from this exercise, which can be mind-boggling at first but is relatively simple. Having started from a realistic image, by applying mental steps we have brought the realistic into the world of abstraction. Creating abstract images from the serendipity can be so exciting, but doing it through a series of thought processes can be much more satisfying.

This exercise reinforces one of the fundamental steps toward abstraction, which is that the artist and his mind are in charge of the end product. The ‘rules’ have changed. It is not how things are that is important, rather it is how we choose to interpret something in our minds that produces the abstract image.
